ESTA USA: Entry to the U.S. for Visa Waiver Participants

All international travelers aiming to enter the United States must secure either a valid visa or an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) unless they are permanent residents. Unlike visas, which are issued by U.S. embassies, an ESTA is obtained online and is a critical requirement for those traveling under the U.S. Visa Waiver Program. This online system streamlines the application process, making it easier for travelers to gain entry when arriving by air or sea.

How to Apply for an ESTA: Requirements and Process

To apply for an ESTA, eligibility is limited to citizens from 41 countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program. Applicants must fill out the ESTA form and possess a biometric passport equipped with a microchip to be considered. The ESTA allows for stays of up to 90 days in the U.S. for purposes such as tourism, business meetings, short-term study, or medical treatments.

Applicants are advised to secure their ESTA approval before booking flights or accommodations, as it confirms their eligibility to travel under the Visa Waiver Program. Once approved, travelers can update their ESTA with final travel details prior to their departure.
